Good Friday Fasting Guide

"He was pierced for our transgressions..." – Isaiah 53:5

Join us as we fast together on Good Friday to remember Christ’s sacrifice, seek God in prayer, and prepare our hearts for Resurrection Sunday.

🙏 Why Fast on Good Friday?

Fasting is a way to:

  • Remember the suffering and death of Jesus

  • Create space to pray, read Scripture, and worship

  • Replace physical hunger with spiritual hunger

  • Deepen your longing for God and dependence on Him

“When you fast, do not look somber…” (Matthew 6:16-18)
Jesus expected His followers to fast—not to earn favor with God, but to draw closer to Him.

📅 What Kind of Fast Are We Doing?

We are encouraging a one-day food fast from sunrise to sunset (or a full 24 hours if you're able). You may choose:

  • Water-only Fast

  • Liquids-only Fast (broth, smoothies, or juices)

  • Modified Fast (skipping two meals, or fasting from solid food only)

  • Alternative Fast (if you’re unable to fast from food: fast from media, entertainment, or another comfort)

🩺 Is It Safe to Fast?

Yes—for most healthy adults, a one-day fast is safe. But please do not fast from food if:

  • You’re pregnant or nursing

  • You’re under 16 (ask a parent to help decide)

  • You have diabetes, eating disorders, or health conditions that require regular food intake

Always consult your doctor if you’re unsure.

🕰️ A Sample Schedule

Here’s a simple structure for your day:

Morning (Start of Fast):

  • Drink water, spend time in prayer and Scripture

  • Read: Isaiah 53 or Psalm 22

  • Ask God to align your heart with His

Midday (When Hunger Grows):

  • Pause to pray whenever you feel hungry

  • Reflect on Jesus’ suffering and His love

  • Worship or listen to a Christ-focused playlist

  • Journal or write down your prayers

Afternoon/Evening:

  • Read from the Gospels: Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, or John 19

  • Pray with your family or a friend

  • Break your fast with prayer and gratitude, ideally at our evening service as we share the Lord’s Supper together.

🧠 Helpful Tips

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day

  • Avoid strenuous exercise

  • Expect to feel weak, but let it remind you of your dependence on Christ

  • Keep your focus on Jesus, not your discomfort

  • Write down what God shows you during the fast

🗣️ Fasting with Kids or Teens?

Younger children shouldn't fast from food, but they can:

  • Skip snacks

  • Give up screen time

  • Do acts of kindness

  • Join in prayer and Scripture reading

Let them ask questions and be part of the spiritual journey.

🙌 Ending the Fast

As the day ends, break your fast with something simple. (Like broth, or an apple)

Thank God for the day. Reflect on what He showed you. Look forward to the hope of Resurrection morning!
